Pilates, Yoga-lates and Personal Training
Looking for a personalized approach to Pilates? Jackie offers a total body conditioning routine that will help build flexibility, muscle strength and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips and back. Her method puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, better breathing, and developing a strong core or center, as well as improving coordination and balance.
Jackie’s Total Body Training method for Pilates allows for different exercises to be modified in a range of difficulty from beginning to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises she will develop for you as part of your personal training program or with Pilates or Yoga-lates classes.
Jackie utilizes the following “Principles of Pilates” with her own Total Body Training Method for personalized Pilates Reformer sessions as well as Pilates and Yoga classes:
Pilates demands intense focus with control and concentration on the exercises. You must concentrate on your entire body for smooth movements. Jackie uses this to help clients needing corrective exercise to those wanting advanced personal training sessions.
“Contrology” was Joseph Pilates’ name for his method and it is based on the idea of muscle control. Pilates is based on concentrating thoroughly to be in control of your muscles to feel each movement, each moment. By using muscles to lift against gravity, especially while on the Reformer, the Pilates client will develop strong core control.
The group of muscles in the center of the body—encompassing the abdomen, lower and upper back, hips, buttocks, and inner thighs— is known in Pilates as the “powerhouse”. All movement in Pilates should begin from the powerhouse and flow outward to the limbs.
Flow or Efficiency of Movement
In Pilates, the goal is for graceful movement and flow, with appropriate transitions of one move into the next. Strength, flexibility and endurance which stems from the center coordinate together and then move outward to the extremities.
As Jackie often states, “Form over function every time.” This is also vital for Pilates: as the personal training client or Pilates student focuses on the form with each exercise, they achieve maximum benefit. The practice, then should also carry over into everyday life as taking time to live fully and be in the moment. This is a natural tie to Jackie’s philosophy for yoga classes and personal training for a mind, body, spirit connect both on and off the mat.
Just as Jackie teaches her yoga students, breathing is important to the personal training client and Pilates student. Better breath allows for an increase in the circulation of oxygenated blood in the body and proper in full inhalation and complete exhalation are keys to health. When breathing with Pilates, you are to breathe deep into your back body and into your sides, creating space in the rib cage. In yoga, Jackie often refers to this as “boxing the lungs up and out”. In Pilates, students are instructed to engage their deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles and maintain this engagement as they inhale. Pilates attempts to properly coordinate this breathing practice with movement, including breathing instructions with every exercise. Jackie instructs her students on the importance of learning to breathe correctly, whether they are in Pilates classes or yoga classes. She often says, “It is the breath that is the Pilates. It is the breath that is the yoga.”
Personal training clients, Pilates and Yoga students are taught to use their “powerhouse” throughout life’s daily activities. As this is the center of the body, if strengthened, it offers a solid foundation for any movement and protects the spine. In Pilates, this Powerhouse refers to the front, side and back muscles found between the upper inner thighs and underarms. Students will learn how to use their Powerhouse whether they are exercising, or in everyday life.
“I love it when my students remark they have had an “aha” moment when they realize while they are standing in line somewhere and self-correct their posture, because they’ve learned here how to really stand up straight and engage their Powerhouse for a straight spine, strong core and better balance.”
